How To Make ChatGPT Better at Math

w/ Examples

Have you ever asked ChatGPT for a specific word count? Frustrating, isn’t it?

You ask for 100 words and get 80, request more, and you’ll get 82. It’s a tedious process, and AI never seems to get it right.

But I've found the answer!

I've discovered a way to get the exact word count you need from ChatGPT.

Ready to learn how? Grab your coffee, and let’s get started.

How To
Control ChatGPT Word Count

I tested this method on GPT-4 and Claude-3.5, and it works on both.

1/ Initial Prompt

Start your conversation as usual. Specify what you need and your desired length of the response.

For example:

Write a 1000-word-long SEO-optimized blog post about "best digital marketing strategies in 2024". Use direct language, engaging tone, and aim for a 6th-grade English comprehension level.

Ideally, the AI should produce a 1000-word post.

It’s never the case, but don’t worry, we’re just getting started.

2/ Follow-up Prompt

Large language models often struggle with math, including word count. But they’re good at coding. And we can use that.

Here’s the follow-up prompt.

Remember, I need a blog post that is 1000 words long.

Use a code interpreter to count the words in your response.
- If the length is not in the range of 950 - 1050 words, rewrite it
- Do this until you write a blog post that is in the range of 950 - 1050 words.

And now you wait…

3/ Wait for It...

It might take a few tries for ChatGPT to get the word count right.

In my case, it took four tries and I had to wait two minutes. If you’re interested here’s the whole conversation: ChatGPT conversation.

Eventually, I got a response that was 986 words long.

ChatGPT nailing word count

Using this method, you can get the exact word count you need from ChatGPT. It’s an easy and effective solution to a common problem.

BTW: I also tried to test this on GPT-4o, but it usually nailed the word count on the first try.
