How To Make AI Funny

The most obvious thing is to ask AI for a funny response. This was also my approach in the past. The prompt would look something like this.

Write introduction for a blog post on topic: "How to start online business". Make it sound funny.

But it didn’t get me far. And the response was very cringe.

I tried any variations of the word funny. I tried super funny, mega funny, hilarious. I tried anything, but none of it worked.

To understand why, we need to break down what “funny“ actually means.

1/ Breaking Down Humor

So what’s the problem with asking AI to be “funny”?

It’s the word itself. When we say that word, we usually refer to humor. And humor is subjective.

It has many forms, many types, and it appeals to anyone differently.

So in order for ChatGPT to make us laugh, it needs to know what kind of humor we like.

And in order to know what kind of humor we like, we need to break down humor to its core.

Don’t worry, I already did that. And I’ve put together a cheat sheet that will help you.

2/ Using Types of Humor in Prompts

Let’s see if all my hard work pays out. Let’s pick one type of humor from the cheat sheet and try to get a response that will make us laugh.

I’m a huge fan of sarcasm so I’ll have to pick it. Here’s the prompt I will use.

Write an introduction to a blog post about the topic: "How to start an online business".

Use an engaging tone and simple language. Aim for 6th-grade English comprehension level. But the most important thing is that the introduction has to use sarcasm.

Again, humor is subjective. What makes someone laugh doesn’t have to be funny for someone else.

But I have to say, I had a solid laugh while reading through the response I got.

As you can see, AI can be funny. You just have to be more specific. You need to tell it what makes you laugh.

3/ Adding Specificity

You can even take this one level further.

Instead of saying what type of humor you want. You specify your favorite comedian, your favorite puns, or anything else that comes to mind.

Here’s what I tried.

Write an introduction to a blog post about the topic: "How to start an online business".

Use an engaging tone and simple language. Aim for 6th-grade English comprehension level. But the most important thing is that the introduction has to use sarcasm and it needs to sound like Chandler Bing from "Friends" wrote it.

And as you might’ve guessed, the response was even better.
